Apple pie is a must have for thanksgiving dinner, which is why I would like to share my favorite apple pie recipe! I have tried several recipes and not one can come close to my mother's! Not quite sure where the original recipe came from, but my aunt contributed to the original, who then gave it to my mother, and then she contributed to the recipe, thus resulting the most delicious apple pie to exist! I'm not kidding when I say it's the best! Don't be intimated by the amount of steps! I also made a video for this recipe to help you out. :) This recipe makes two pies and any type of apple can be used, but tastes best when using red-yellowish apples. Hope you guys give a try and let me know what you think! Oh and I hope you're thanksgiving is wonderful and delicious. May your hearts be filled with gratitude! :)
Apple Pie
Ingredients:
For the crust:
- 5 tbsp water
- 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
- 1 egg
- 3 cups of flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 1/2 cups (3 sticks) room temp butter
For the filling:
- 3 or 4 apples per pie, thinly sliced
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp nutmeg
- Salt, a pinch
- 3 heaping tbsp flour
Instructions:
1. In a bowl or measuring cup, beat the egg, water, and vinegar.
2. In a separate bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, and salt.
3. In a separate large bowl smash down the butter with a fork, and then add the dry ingredients until you get several little clumps.
4. Then add the wet ingredients, continue to mix with a fork until you feel like you must use your hands.
5. Form a round ball, wrap with plastic wrap, and refrigerate for an hour.
6. Meanwhile, peel your apples and cut them in thin slices.
7. In a large bowl, add your sliced apples (3 or 4), sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and flour, and mix well.
8. Once your dough has firmed up in the fridge, take it out and divide into two. Then divide each into two again, but make sure one is a little smaller than the other. The smaller ones will be used for the top crust and the larger ones for the bottom crust. (You should have a total of four balls)
9. Now would be the time to preheat your oven to 450 degrees.
10. Use one of the larger balls to roll out your bottom crust, big enough to fit in your pan.
11. Once the crust is placed, carefully add the apples.
12. On top of the apples, add five thin slices of butter.
13. Next, roll out one of the smaller balls for the top crust and place on pie. This is where you can be a little creative. You can do a lattice design, or use a leaf cookie cutter to cut out leaves and cover your pie beautifully! What ever your heart desires! :)
14. If you choose to not do a creative design, make sure to cut several slits on top.
15. Sprinkle your pie with lots of love... and sugar.
16. Voila! You're done! Now repeat steps 7 & 10-15 for second pie!
17. Bake the pies for 15 minutes at 450 degrees, then 45 minutes at 350 degrees.
18. Pies are done when they have a nice golden brown color.
